Leanne Helin has
taken northwest native jewellery designing to the next phase
and flare, creating elegant flow and artistry. The designs and
crests of her Tsimshian heritage flow through her work. The
legends of her ancestry guide her creativity retained in the
strict form lines on every piece of hand carved jewellery. She
works in both silver and gold and is one of the foremost native
women jewellery carvers on the westcoast. |
 |
The exhibition of Helin’s
striking carvings and paintings were on display in the lobby of
Terasen Centre, 1111 West Georgia Street in Vancouver. The
exhibit coincided with national Aboriginal Day, Saturday, June
21.
Helin is part of a new
generation of aboriginal artists whose work reflects traditional
Tsimshian legends in today’s society. His past work includes
designing the crew patch for the 1996 Columbia space shuttle and
taking part in carving the world’s largest totem pole, built for
the XV Commonwealth Games in Victoria in 1994. Helin was also
part of the First Nations Canoe Regatta to the Victoria games,
paddling the Raven Song, a 40-foot canoe he carved from a cedar
log according to traditional Tsimshian standards.

Living in the small town of
Tofino and the gateway to the Pacific Rim and Clayoquot Sound,
Lewis & Cathy watched the small fishing and logging village of
Tofino transform into the bustling worldwide attraction for the
wildlife and natural beauty and cultural history of the local
area. Now, year round we receive visitors from around the world.
As we enter into the 21st Century, we have decided that the
internet helps make our world that much smaller, as our visitors
who never bought those treasures and regret wishing they had, now
can from their homes |

The combination of Donna May's
background as a music teacher and linguist of her language and with
Tony's computer layout and history work, they have created a very
unique teaching curriculum called, "Language By Osmosis." With the
aid of TPR it is used for the preservation of the Tsimshian culture.
In their ongoing quest to
bring understanding to the use of the language they try to remind
people that they may be Shim-al-gyack.
As a Non-profit program, they
continue to teach and produce materials to enable those interested
in the preservation of the Language.
