Meanings and Explanations

Thunderbird: Characterized by wrapped under hooked beak and double feather flukes on back of head - also faces and bodies of humans.  Vocally gifted in song, storytelling, politics and education.  Strong leadership qualities; aggressive in sports and enjoyer of flight and adrenaline rush experiences.

Tsimshian Mythology - Our story speaks of the Thunderbird as being the thunderous messenger of the sky with the spirits of our ancestors embodied within it`s body and wings.  If the people listened and obeyed they would prosper because the Thunderbird was sent by the Creator and was summoned through prayer and ceremony.

Sun Spirit: Symbolized by grinning teeth and strong projecting rays.  Bringer of light through wisdom, song, stories and praise.  Also it symbolizes life in all living things, through a warm spirit, nurturing of the earth and all creatures.  Generosity and vollunteering of time and efforts.

Tsimshian Mythology - A spirit personage of the Creator of the universe, watching over the planets, ravens and the Mother Spirits.

Moon Spirit: Characterized by closed or open eyes with no teeth - circular or cresent shape and sometimes no eyebrows.  Nocturnal, night owl, content and wise; teacher of good life skills and practices.  Motherly and Grandmotherly, protector of family and children. Writer or artistic.

Tsimshian Mythology - Spirit personage of Mother Earth as she watches over all her creatures at night, especially Raven.

Cat Family:  Characterized by long or short tail, short pointed ears and long claws.  Hunter, shopper, aggressive and sports minded. Good provider, independent, playful and purrsuasive.

Tsimshian Mythology - not mentioned much in our stories other than raven tricking him for his prey and not without messy consequences, for Raven.

Salmon and other fish:  Similar to real fish characteristics, sometimes only as a ovoid head which was an egg or embrio face.  A mainstream kind of person; goes with the flow or against the tide.  Determined and dedicated; lover of the water, sports or travel or living.  Respectful, kind and quiet. Lover of education(schools of any kind ), great host and chef.

Tsimshian Mythology - Symbolized as the life giver and willing supplier of good nutrition.  Teacher of respecting the practice of traditions and respect of mother Earth.  The tribes were badly affected and almost starved to death because one person disrespected the practice of burning fish bones, and giving back to the sea or waters they came from.
