Many years ago a great northern people called the Tsimshian, would hunt for sea otter and fur seals, which took them far out to the sea where they saw many strange things and strange beings. This is what happened to four great hunters who saw a great battle between the giant devilfish [octopus] and the blackfish [killerwhale]. These hunters were away out to sea hunting the sea otter and fur seals and went to an island for shelter and rest. While these men camped here, they knew it to be the abode of the giant devilfish who had taken many canoes, destroying many people. Soon, a large blackfish, with a hole in its fin to distinguish it, came along to where the giant devilfish lived and it dove under and was gone a long time.

Thousands of years ago my Tsimshian ancestors developed an intricate life style that embodied a political, social and creative system. Like most aboriginal races around the world this system maintained a balanced relationship with Mother Earth, contrary to histories tales of savagery and cannabolism. Aboriginal people practiced and protected their traditions and respected what they had as treasured gifts from the Creator, to pass on to their future generations.
My Tsimshian family history impressively passes on an intricate art form that beautifully represents people transformed into mythological creatures, and teaches unity with creation, through seeing the world through the eyes of the animals. Respect of these creatures was practiced through rituals and stories that were displayed through the art designed on possessions, buildings, canoes, territorial markings, ceremonial customs and even body tattoos.
With so many beautiful art creations, wondrous and weird stories, spiritual and ceremonial practices there is definitely too much detail for my Love Site that takes us away from the special substance of traditions passed on from the past. I have studied all the coastal tribal groups traditions and art forms to better understand the similarities, all of which do have some connection in one way or another.
Mainly we can see that the art forms of the north in al the tribal groups shared some developmental associations that probably occurred through artists being hired by other Chiefs from different tribes, which the artists had the freedom to do. Or through kidnapping them in raids and wars, which shows that in all cultures, original art has always carried some strong impressions and high value. In the aboriginal system of the west coast the better the artist the better the Chief looked, and in most cultures.
